I found this post incredibly challenging to write. I think it’s partly because I am passionate about this topic and partly because it’s taken me a long time to get my mind in order. A couple of months back I had the opportunity to meet and discuss philanthropy with Louise Walsh from Philanthropy Australia. Louise explained that Philanthropy Australia work with people to help find their passion and where best to donate to align with their values.
I walked away with a new sense of purpose and a big seed was planted for me. My mind was ticking over thinking of all the new ways I could potentially help. And whilst Philanthropy Australia work with Australian Charities (and do an amazing job!), I found my mind wandering abroad.

Travel is my passion. Family is my passion. The more I thought about it, the legacy that I want to leave for my kids is seeing the world through new, fresh eyes. We travel to amazing places and see spectacular things but it’s seeing beyond the hotel room and looking at ways that we can make a positive impact on the destinations that we travel to. By bringing up socially responsible children I think it’s the beginning of a new chapter where our kids have the ability to look beyond our own back fence.
It was overwhelming for me and I had no idea where to start. My philosophy has always been to start small but to just make a start. Trawling the internet I started to see the keywords “travel philanthropy” pop up all over the place. My ideas of aligning our travel with my philanthropic values started to fall into place.
So this is me starting small. In two weeks we are going to Bali for a family holiday. I have been researching ways to donate there and what the best value for the charities there would be. I came across this amazing not for profit website called Carry for Kids that lists items that orphanages in some developing countries need right now.
Tonight I am sitting down with my 4yr old to go through the Bali orphanages wish list and he will pick out what he would like to donate. I have discussed this with him previously and he is excited to be involved.
This is a small step for us as a family and we are looking forward to injecting more social responsibility into our lives as we go on our adventures.
