If you follow me over on Instagram you may have noticed that I have a slight obsession with carousels. Thankfully my kids love going on them (I think I’ll be devastated when they decide they’re too big one day!) and I enjoy sharing a special moment with them whenever I get the chance.

I think my love affair with carousels started one summer on a family trip to the Gold Coast. I was 16 and my bestie had come along with us. We visited a theme park and when we saw the big old carousel we just had to jump on. There is something so whimsical about throwing aside all your inhibitions and enjoying something so simple. My sisters, my cousins, my friend – we all rode the carousel round and round caught up in the moment and not caring who was watching. The laughter from that day is still ringing in my ears and makes me grin ear to ear like a schoolgirl. For me that day is bittersweet as my friend sadly passed on the following year. It’s a day of happiness that I cherish.

My recent trip to the USA gave me plenty of opportunities to indulge in my carousel obsession. San Fransisco had loads of impressive carousels! I was disappointed that I didn’t get to ride the one in Central Park New York but I guess that gives me an excuse to go back 😉 Here are a few of my fav carousel snaps from our trip:

I’ve heard of other travellers who have obsessions with things like bridges, lighthouses or museums. Is there something you’re drawn to when you travel?
