Last weekend we headed to the Gold Coast for some much needed sunshine. Granted it’s not really tropical but hey at this point in winter anywhere that gets over 20 degrees feels like summer to me. Feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin was just the respite from wintery Melbourne that I needed.
If you’re freezing your little butt off (cough, southern states I’m looking at you!) I’ll bet you are dreaming of a tropical getaway right about now. Here’s my hit list of places to escape with your family that I guarantee are worth the winter waxing and pedi.
I organised a surprise trip for my family to Magnetic Island last year and ever since we got back I’ve been thinking of ways to get back there. It’s such a cruisey, relaxed place that it’s impossible not to slow down. Stunning secluded beaches and lush national park make up the picturesque island that is untouched by the hustle and bustle of the mainland.
My family especially enjoyed the relaxing ferry trip across from Townsville, visiting the Koala Park and kayaking at Horseshoe bay.

Cairns is made for kids! With the Great Barrier Reef at your doorstep, it makes for an under water adventure your family will never forget. We took a Quicksilver cruise out to their floating pontoon and it was such a great day out.
Kids of all ages will love riding on the Steam train to Kuranda and then catching the gondola back down the mountain. Hartleys Crocodile farm is a favourite with my kids and the Cairns Night Zoo was a great way to see the animals after dark.
Whilst you can’t swim in the ocean (unless you’d like to be croc bait!) if you want to cool off there is a beautiful purpose built lagoon on the waterfront that is safe from the local wildlife.
There’s a reason Fijians have a reputation for adoring kids! From the minute you arrive the kids are literally taken off your hands. We have been to Fiji a couple of times now and loved it every single time. They have some of the best kids clubs and if it’s relaxation you’re after then this is the place for you.
Walks on the beach, days spent by the pool, snorkelling, exploring the rainforest, drinking coconut milk straight from the coconuts – it’s a tropical dream come true.
We recently stayed at the Intercontinental – you can read about my experience HERE

I think Darwin is my all time fav family getaway destination. Maybe it’s the magical sunsets or the predictable weather… did I mention the sunsets? Spectacular!
Darwin is croc central and if your kids are anything like mine then they’ll enjoy hanging out with these prehistoric predators. The best place to see the Crocs up close is Crocasaurus Cove where your little ones can hold a baby croc if they’re game.
I like to be close to the action so we have stayed down at the Waterfront a couple of times. We had a blast at the wave pool and lagoon plus there are loads of dining options in the area.
