It may be chilly out but there’s no better time to rug up, get outside and explore your own backyard. I live about an hour and a half from Melbourne so when we had a spare weekend a couple of weeks back, we decided to pack up the kids and head to the City for the night.
Saturday: Federation Square was our first stop and it was a great place to start our weekend adventure. Fed Square is jammed packed with family friendly activities and this winter there is even an ice skating rink! First we checked out a few exhibitions at Acmi to escape the rain and warm up. The kids loved playing old school video games and looking at the Screen Worlds exhibition. Once the rain cleared, we hit the Momentum Energy River Rink and had a ball skating around with the help of our little penguins.
After exploring Fed Square we decided to take the kids to the Carlton v Bulldogs AFL game. They enjoyed seeing their team play and were super excited to have dinner at the game. By half time the kids were pretty exhausted so we retired to our hotel room at the nearby Travelodge Docklands.
Sunday: We woke up early (read: the kids woke us up!) and went off in search of coffee. Docklands is such a pretty part of the city – there is so much to look at and I found the little alleyways really interesting.
Scienceworks is somewhere we’ve always wanted to take the kids so we checked out of the hotel and headed over to Williamstown. It turned out to be a great family adventure. The kids really enjoyed the Tyrannosaurus – Meet the Family exhibition. We caught the Tycho to the Moon kids show at the Planetarium and I was surprised that the show captured the kids attention for the entire 40 minutes!
The Round Up (what you need to know!):
Stay: Travelodge Docklands. We found the room rates to be reasonable and they allowed us to stay in one room with a queen bed, fold out sofa bed and portacot.
Where are you and your family exploring this chilly weekend?
